Wrecks-N-Effect – New Jack Swing

Wrecks-N-Effect released their debut single “New Jack Swing” on November 22, 1989.  The tracks was produced by Markell Riley and was released on Motown Records. The single was also include on their debut self titled album released on September 1, 1989.

Being a fan of Guy, I knew what kind of music they produced and who came up with the beats.  I knew that Teddy Riley and worked with rap acts like Doug E Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, Heavy D, Redhead Kingpin and Big Daddy Kane.  Since we had already heard the term “New Jack Swing”, we knew at one point or another he would dedicate a whole rap album dedicated to this new sub-genre of music.  Enter Wrecks-N-Effect.

At first, Wrecks-N-Effect consisted of members Aqil “A-Plus” Davidson, Keith “K.C.” Hanns, Brandon Mitchell and Markell Riley.  Soon after this release, Brandon Mitchell was murdered and Keith Hanns left the group.

The main sample on this tracks comes from “Hector” by The Village Callers.  The beat is infectious and like almost every hype Teddy Riley track, it’s made to make you dance.   The rapping done by Aqil and Teddy Riley is nothing extraordinary, but it’s the beats that will make you move and groove.

Their self titled album is dope with tracks like “Juicy“, “Club Head“, “Rock Steady” and “Friends to the End” (featuring The Redhead Kingpin and Scoop Rock) that will make this album worthy of a spin or two.  Of course they hit the jackpot in 1992 with the release of their track “Rump Shaker“.  Right after that, A Tribe Called Quest had a line in one of their songs where Phife Dog said “Strictly hardcore tracks/Not a new Jack swing“, so Wrecks went after Q-Tip and Prince Po after a concert in New York and gave him a black eye.  In reality, Q was trying to break up a fight between Wrecks and Po.  The rumor was that Q-Tip was partially blinded in one eye, but in reality he just tore his retina.

Yo Wreckx-N-Effect
In full effect!
(“Word up!”)
(“Know we need it. Know we need it.”)
(“Give it to me. Give it, give it”)

[Verse 1: Aqil]
It’s the New Jack Swing
Yes, it’s something funky that you can cling
All you gotta do is c’mon and sing
Word for word, every lyric that I bring
And if you surely swing your body
When you step in cool inside a party
Watching all the girls just pumping like hotties
They have parts that look better than Ferraris
So I had to try these
Dancing, with this girl, on my luck
I was chancing, hoping she was the type for romancing
But my rap needed a little enhancing
Because this girlie wasn’t answering
Nothing I said, I started getting fed and turning red
Then, I told her just a bit about Ted
She gave a wink and started to think
But didn’t believe a thing about the New Jack Swing

(“You got to get down, you got to get down”
“You got to get down, down, down, down”)
Didn’t believe a thing about the New Jack Swing
(“You got to get down, you got to get down”
“You got to get down, down, down, down”)
(“Give it, give it, give it to me”)

[Verse 2: Teddy Riley]
I made the New Jack Swing
Yes, T.R., is my name
Making you dance to my thing
Is the way I entertain, baby
I make the beats you like
Yes, that’s right, it’s outta sight
All my beats are very hype
Yes, G.R. is moving it, right?
I got Keith Sweat, Heavy D
Today, Moe Dee
B. Sure, and my man Bobby Brown
I got Zan the Man, Redhead
Boy George, James and
Deja, and my homeboys Guy
And you got to get fly[Chorus][Verse 3: Aqil]
Back to the matter
The New Jack Swing is the sound that can flatter
Any other sound around town doesn’t give the
Same type of feeling that this one delivers
So your body shivers, so bad
Some dope beat medicine you wish you had
Dipping your feelings from glad to sad
But you’re not getting a thing
So just chill and get whipped by the New Jack Swing
