Sister Nancy – Bam Bam

Sister Nancy released her single “Bam Bam” back in 1982.  The track was produced by the great Winston Riley and was the second single off her debut album “One, Two“.  The song is considered one of the greatest Dancehall tracks of all time and has been sampled in Hip Hop by various artists.

If you are a Hip Hop Head and you are so hardcore that you look up the samples in songs and go back to listen to them, you usually are the type of person that loves all genres of music.  Dancehall is one of those genres that after you hear one song, you get addicted much like the way I fell in love with hip Hop.

Back in 1982, I was 11 years old and rocking to Grandmaster Flash, Donna Summer, Michael Jackson and Led Zeppelin.  One day while I was watching television the song “Pass the Dutchie” by Musical Youth came on and I was blown away by the rhythm, or I should say “riddim”.  The same year I had heard Sister Nancy’sBam Bam” and I was able to put the Reggae/Dancehall under my belt.  I had heard tracks by the great Bob Marley before but none of his music sounded like Hip Hop to me until I heard this song.

The song is really a mix of two songs plus Sister Nancy’s vocals.  The horn beat comes from Ansel CollinsStalag 17” and everybody in the Dancehall world has used this beat like Hip hop producers use “Funky Drummer” by James Brown.  The second sample is that of a vocal sample taken from “Bam Bam” by The Maytal.  In a world where males run the Dancehall genre, Sister Nancy drops one of the greatest Dancehall tracks of all time!

In Hip Hop, Pete Rock & CL Smooth used it for their track “The Basement” while Lauryn Hill used it for her song “Lost Ones“.  On the west coast, Too Short also took the sample for his song “Blowjob Betty” while Guerilla Black used it on his single “Compton“.  Gang Starr and Main Source have also used the track plus countless more.
