Poor Righteous Teachers – Shakiyla

poor-righteous-teachers-shakiyla-back-n-the-day-buffetPoor Righteous Teachers released their single “Shakiyla” back in 1990.  The song was the third single off their debut album “Holy Intellect” that was released on May 29, 1990.  The single was produced by Tony D. and was released on Profile/Arista Records.  The remix that appears on the video was released on their second album “Pure Poverty” in 1991. PRT consists of members Wise IntelligentCulture Freedom and their DJ, Father Shaheed.

Back in 1990, groups like Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, X-Clan and Brand Nubian were making a name for themselves when a positive pro-black message.  One of the groups that falls in this category yet is forgotten and sometimes underappreciated is the New Jersey crew of PRT.  They come with a creative approach and give us something to be proud about.  In this case, the praise the black woman and beg her not to follow trends and just be herself.

Tony D. takes a funky piano sample of Kid Dynamite’sUphill Peace of Mind” to open up the track.  He then takes another piano sample, this time “L Dopa” by Maynard Ferguson on top of a simple drum beat to complete the track dedicated to the Nubian princess.  That’s where Wise Intelligent and Culture Freedom take over and with a simple Paul McCartney sample, they put a smile on our face.  They take an interpolation of Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney’s “The Girl Is Mind” to remind us that “The wise black queen is mine“.  A positive message when rappers were calling women out their name.

You’re no hooker, you’re no slut, you’re no bitch and she listens
You’re the mother of civilization and I hate them snakes that disrespect

Wise Intelligent has that ragamuffin style of flowing that makes him stand apart from the rough and rugged MC’s of the 90’s.  He warns us that this is not a “love ballad” meaning he is serious about dedicating a song to the black queen.  How can anybody not love this track?  Respect due!!!

Ease up, cause this is not a love ballad

[Verse 1]
Yes I come to pay tribute to Shakiyla because you’re lovely
Word is bond, your sister loves me and I love her like no other before
Ayee
I say I spend a lot of time with the queen I protect
You’re the sister close to me, he take her deeper into debt
Say sister, knowledge god that of queens your existence
You’re no hooker, you’re no slut, you’re no bitch and she listens
You’re the mother of civilization and I hate them snakes that disrespect
And they often disrespect ya when they find out that I sex ya
Wondering what are they trying with knowledge of themselves
Shakiyla’s civilized, she despises the drug you sell
Shakiyla deep black woman she loves my light to death
These savages try sweating, tell culture I say this

[Hook]
Wake up from all those savage dreams
Thinking that she’s yours, not mines
Those earrings and silly chains
It’s really just a waste of time
The queen is mine
Wake up
The wise black queen is mine
She’s mine
She’s mine
(Ease up!)

[Verse 2]
This one that’s [?] to Shakiyla
Word is bond, the sister needs me
And I need her like no other before
Ayee
I tell ya strong be the vibe that combines us together
Lots of love, trust, and truth, understanding that’s forever
Not biting, no one shooting
[?] on my mind
Perfection rules the ignorance, loves not blind boy
I see clearly daily baby crazy I gotcha
She’s all this, she’s all that
And it gets greater by the hour
Without the acts of separation
Though that’s one of woman’s power
Black man’s guide to understanding
The black woman’s full flower
[?]
At least the cresses of her soul
Shakiyla deep black woman she loves my light to death
These savages try sweating, tell culture I say this
