House of Pain – Jump Around

House of Pain released their debut single “Jump Around” on May 5th, 1992.  The track was produced by DJ Muggs and was the first single off their self titled debut album.  The single and album were released on Tommy Boy Records.

When this single first dropped, I remember being in Los Angeles and thinking it was the white version of Cypress Hill.  I was wrong and by a lot!  Everlast, DJ Lethal and Danny Boy had a sound all their own.  DJ Muggs produced the song with some incredible samples, and the rest is history!

Muggs starts off taking the horn sample from Bob & Earl’sHarlem Shuffle” and then taking the horns from “Shoot Your Shot” by Jr. Walker & the All Stars.  But he’s not done yet!  He also takes the drum pattern from “Tramp” by Lowell Fulson and on top of that, a funky sample from Chubby Checker’sPopeye” track.  It’s a track that the Hip Hops heads and the dancers can appreciate.  Everlast then comes in and spits the rhymes everybody knows and loves.

Pack it up, pack it in, let me begin
I came to win, battle me that’s a sin
I won’t ever slack up, punk you better back up
Try and play the role and yo the whole crew’ll act up
Get up, stand up (c’mon!) c’mon throw your hands up
If you’ve got the feeling, jump up, touch the ceiling
Muggs lets the funk flow, someone’s talking junk
Yo I bust him in the eye, and then I’ll take the punk’s ho
Feelin, funkin, amps in the trunk and I got more rhymes
Than there’s cops at a Dunkin’ Donuts shop
Sho’ nuff, I got props
From the kids on the Hill plus my mom and my pops
I came to get down, I came to get down
So get out your seat and jump around!

[Hook]
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump up, jump up and get down!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump!

[Verse 2: Everlast]
I’ll serve your ass like John McEnroe
If your girl steps up, I’m smacking the ho
Word to your moms, I came to drop bombs
I got more rhymes than the Bible’s got Psalms
And just like the Prodigal Son I’ve returned
Anyone stepping to me you’ll get burned
Cause I got lyrics, but you ain’t got none
If you come to battle bring a shotgun!
But if you do you’re a fool, cause I duel, to the death
Trying to step to me, you’ll take your last breath
I got the skills, come get your fill
Cause when I shoot the gift, I shoot to kill
I came to get down, I came to get down
So get out your seat and jump around!

[Hook]
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump up, jump up and get down!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump!

[Verse 3: Everlast]
I’m the cream of the crop, I rise to the top
I never eat a pig, cause a pig is a cop
Or better yet a Terminator, like Arnold Schwarzanegger
Try to play me out like, as if my name was Sega
But I ain’t going out like no punk bitch
Get used to one style and yo and I might switch
It up up and around, then buck buck you down
Put out your head and then you wake up in the Dawn of the Dead
I’m coming to get ya, I’m coming to get ya
Spitting out lyrics, homie I’ll wet ya
I came to get down, I came to get down
So get out your seat and jump around!

[Hook]
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump around!
Jump up, jump up and get down!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump! (everybody jump)
Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!
Jump!

Yo, this is dedicated to Joe “The Biter” Nicolo!
Grab the Bozack, punk!

As soon as I heard this track and ran out to Tower Records to get a copy and then I flip it to the b-side and get a treat I was not expecting.  The Pete Rock (Blood Stain Remix) has a sample that made my head bob and unfortunately since I didn’t have internet yet, I couldn’t find who the originator was.  Lou Donaldson’sPot Belly” was the track and the only question I have is…which one is better?  My choice?  Pete Rock takes the crown!  He even spits some rhymes with…

Listen to the sound that pounds, I jump around
I’m no clown, I get down
To the funk, listen to the wig out
And step to the rear, dear, cause I’m here
The P to the E to the T E rockin’
The runs in your stockin’
So hon, put the lock in
Chillin’ with the House Of Pain
Blood stains the ground
Huh, I jump around

Which one is your favorite?  This single is no joke!
