Happy Born Day Ice Cube

Happy Born Day to the one and only Ice CubeO’Shea Jackson was born on June 15, 1969 and is best known for being part of the pioneer rap group N.W.A.  Cube’s rap career started back in 1986 when he teamed up with Sir Jinx and formed the group C.I.A..  After showing Eazy E his lyrics for “Boyz In The Hood“, it was evident that Cube had a gift for writing rhymes!  The first time I heard “Dope Man” off their Panic Zone EP, I was blown away by the lyrics and Cube’s voice.  Cube and N.W.A were about to change the rap game forever!

If ya smoke ‘caine, you’re a stupid motherfucker.
Known around the hood as the schoolyard clucka’.
Doin’ that crack with all the money ya got.
On ya hands and knees, searching for a piece of rock.

Jonzin’ for a hit, and ya lookin’ for more.
Doug stole a Alpine outta Eazy’s 64′.
Ya need ya ass whooped ’cause it’s outta this Earth.
Can’t get a 10-piece, need a dollar fifty’s worth.

Knucklehead nigga, you turned into a crook.
But swear up and down, boy, that you ain’t hooked.
You beat ya friend up and you whooped his ass long.
‘Cause he hit the pipe till the rock was all gone.

You robbin’ and stealin’, bugging and illin’
While the Dopeman’s dealin’.
What is killin’ your pain? Cocaine? This shit’s insane.
Yo, E, she’s a berry, let’s run a train!

Man, I wouldn’t touch that bitch!

Me neither, hoe go home and wash out ya beaver.
And nigga’s are out there, messing up people’s health,
Yo, what the fuck you gotta say for yourself?

Straight Outta Compton” is sonically and lyrically on that next level, and on the title track Cube starts it off with the classic line that everyone knows by heart!

Straight outta Compton, crazy motherfucker named Ice Cube
From the gang called Niggas With Attitudes
When I’m called off, I got a sawed off
Squeeze the trigger, and bodies are hauled off
You too, boy, if ya fuck with me
The police are gonna hafta come and get me
Off yo ass, that’s how I’m goin out
For the punk motherfuckers that’s showin out
Niggaz start to mumble, they wanna rumble
Mix em and cook em in a pot like gumbo
Goin off on a motherfucker like that
With a gat that’s pointed at yo ass
So give it up smooth
Ain’t no tellin when I’m down for a jack move
Here’s a murder rap to keep yo dancin
With a crime record like Charles Manson
AK-47 is the tool
Don’t make me act the motherfuckin fool
Me you can go toe to toe, no maybe
I’m knockin niggaz out tha box, daily
Yo weekly, monthly and yearly
Until them dumb motherfuckers see clearly
That I’m down with the capital C-P-T
Boy you can’t fuck with me
So when I’m in your neighborhood, you better duck
Cause Ice Cube is crazy as fuck
As I leave, believe I’m stompin
But when I come back, boy, I’m comin straight outta Compton

When Ice Cube departed N.W.A, it left a whole in the group that some might say was never replaced.  Once you heard “Amerikkka’s Most Wanted” and “Death Certificate” you knew he had made the correct decision.  But there was a side of Cube that we hadn’t seen until we got to the last track of his sophomore solo album.  On “No Vaseline” he goes after his old crew and creates one of the hardest and classic diss tracks in Hip Hop History!  Over a dope “Dazz” track by Brick, he disses everyone going hardest at Eazy E.

I never have dinner with the President.
I never have dinner with the President.
I never have dinner with the President.
And when I see your ass again, I’ll be hesitant.
Now I think you a snitch,
throw a house nigga in a ditch.
Half-pint bitch, fuckin’ your homeboys.
You little maggot; Eazy E turned faggot.
With your manager, fella,
fuckin’ MC Ren, Dr. Dre, and Yella.
But if they were smart as me,
Eazy E would be hangin’ from a tree.
With no vaseline, just a match and a little bit of gasoline.
Light ’em up, burn ’em up, flame on…
till that Jheri curl is gone.
On a permanent vacation, off the Massa plantation.
Heard you both got the same bank account,
dumb nigga, what you thinkin’ bout?
Get rid of that Devil real simple, put a bullet in his temple.
Cuz you can’t be the Nigga 4 Life crew
with a white Jew tellin’ you what to do.
Pullin’ wools with your scams, now I gotta play the Silence of the Lambs.
With a midget who’s a punk too,
tryin’ to fuck me, but I’d rather fuck you.
Eric Wright, punk, always into somethin’, gettin’ fucked at night.
By Mista Shitpacker, bend over for the gotdamn cracker, no vaseline…

But he’s not all about insults and “gangsterism”.  The man was conscious of what message he would send to the youth listening to his lyrics and on songs like, “True To The Game“, “Us“, and “A Bird In The Hand” he showed us that he is not just a one dimensional MC.  On “Us” he goes after the “thugs” that ruin his community tells them to look in the mirror.

And all y’all dope-dealers…
Your as bad as the po-lice- cause ya kill us
You got rich when you started slangin’ dope
But you ain’t built us a supermarket
So when can spend our money with the blacks
Too busy buyin’ gold an’ Caddilacs
That’s what ya doin’ with the money that ya raisin’
Exploitin’ us like the Caucasians did
For 400 years – I got 400 tears- for 400 peers
Died last year from gang-related crimes
That’s why I got gang-related rhymes
But when I do a show ta kick some facts
Us Blacks don’t know how ta act
Sometimes I believe the hype, man
We’re messin’ up ourselves and blame the white man
But don’t point the finger you jiggaboo
Take a look at yourself ya dumb nigga you
Pretty soon hip-hop won’t be so nice
No Ice Cube, just Vannilla Ice
And yall sit and scream and cus
But there’s no one ta blame- but US

He also joined forces with Mack 10 and WC to form the supergroup Westside Connection and brought up artists like Yo Yo , The Lench Mobb, Mack 10 and others.  He’s done classic tracks with Public Enemy, 2Pac, Run DMC, Kool G Rap and others.  The man puts in work!

He also has appeared plenty of movies that have been blockbusters and not only an acts but is also a director and producer!  But nothing will compare to “Boyz N The Hood” and “Friday“.  He made us laugh and cry and to this day he continues to bring his talents to the big screen.

No one can ever say that Ice Cube has “fallen off”!  The man has put in some major work and is in constant demand.  In 2015 he co-produced the movie “Straight Outta Compton” and in 2016 was inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so I don’t think that we’ve seen the last of Mr Cube!  We salute you Cube and hope you have many more birthdays to come!
