Fabolous – Artist Spotlight

When we first heard of Fabolous, he appeared on the Lil Mo “Superwoman 2” track. His first official single was the 2Pac inspired “I Can’t Deny It” track featuring Nate Dogg and produced by Rick Rock.  The song was a major hit and put the throwback jersey wearing mc on the map. When his debut album dropped, he had everyone watching what his next move and single will be.

Ghetto Fabolous” was released back on Sept. 11, 2001 and rose as high as #3 on the Billboard Charts.  The album had some memorable cuts like “Keepin’ It Gangsta“,  “Young’n (Holla Back)“, “Right Now & Later On“, and the fly love song “Trade It All“.  The track “Young’n” had us saying, “Holla back Young’n (Hoooo Hoooo!)” and didn’t let go until way passed the summer of 2002.

Rollin, gold two seater
Stash in the dash
Hole through heaters
Blockahhhhh put holes through beaters
Ghetto Fab stroll through Cheetahs
Ballin, Brooklyn dawn
Addicted to Crys hooked on Don
15 G’s hookers on
Ma, I wanna see how you look in thongs
Hustlin, guys that send Po’s
Cause I chop rocks the size of mentos
Blame me, I try to end hoes
Look at the hurt your eyes will squit close
Pimpin’ here’s a new way to flirt
Listen to the two way alert
It goes (2 way beeps in song’s beat)
Lets go VIP boo raise your skirt

Fabolous was well know not just for his DJ Clue produced tracks, but his major throwback jersey game.  On almost every video, the man would come out with a nice MLB, NFL or NBA throwback jersey and the matching cap/shoes.   But he is also known for his love songs like “Trade It All” and “Into You” that appears on his “Street Dreams” album.  With the help of Tamia, he had the ladies wrapped around his finger with rhymes like these,

I can’t really explain it
I’m so into you now
I wanna be more than a friend to you now
When they ask, I mention my babygirl in the interviews now
And I don’t bring the problems from the 90s and the 2 thou
There’s no reason to have a friend or two now
’cause the kid’s ready to tell you how he feels and a few vows
Maybe I speak in general now
But girl, I’m gonna do whatever just to keep a grin on you now
Where I roll, they wear bikinis in the winter too now
What you think about tan lines on the skin of you now?
Why wouldn’t I wanna spend a few thou
On fifth ave, shopping sprees and them dinners to chow
I ain’t concerned with other men with you now
As long as when I slide up in you, you growl
And any dude with you, he better be a kin to you now
And I ain’t jealous, it’s the principle now
I’m so into you

He is not truly an old school artist with only 15 years in the game, but in about 10 years from know, he truly shall be.  He made us spell his name correctly, gave us some dope tracks to bounce to, and showed us what the freshest jerseys were at the time, and for that we salute you!  “Keep(ing) It Gangsta“!  Yall know who!
