Beastie Boys – I’m Down

The Beastie Boys recorded the track “I’m Down” for the “Licensed To Ill” album back in 1986.  The song sampled (it’s really a cover) the track by the same name by The Beatles.

The track was supposed to be “sandwiched” between “She’s Crafty” and “Posse In Effect” but when Michael Jackson heard the track, he would not give permission to the Beasties to include it on their debut album.  Since Michael owned the catalog of all Beatles tracks, Def Jam was not going to release it without clearing the sample.

When I first heard the track, I heard it on an alternative station in Los Angeles named KROQ.  The would play acts like Depeche Mode, The Smiths and The Cure.  The track was funny when I first heard it, but I had to have it since I was a huge Beastie Boys fan.  When Napster came on the scene, you know that’s the first track I ever downloaded.

If this was included, I doubt that the debut album would’ve been more of a classic that it already was.  “Licensed To Ill” was also rumored to have tracks like “Scenario” and “Desperado” included, but those tracks were also not ever officially released.
