Streets is Watching (Soundtrack Spotlight) 1998

Streets is Watching (Soundtrack Spotlight) 1998: Streets is Watching is a musical film starring Jay-Z in which he released a bunch of his music video for the first time. Taking place in Brooklyn, New York the film is most remembered for music from Reasonable Doubt and In My Lifetime, Vol 1 and contains Jay’s first 2 videos “In My Lifetime” and “ I Can’t Get Wit That”. Both songs were released without a major label contract. Written by Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Abdul Malik Abbott, Jay tells a tale about his life in the streets from being a hustler to a performer. The videomentary gives a realism approach to life in the streets without hollywood putting a spin on things. As usual it it wouldn’t be complete without the stamp of approval from Roc-A-Fella Films.

Most of the production was done by Damon Dash, Big Jaz and M.O.P.. “It’s Alright” starred Jay-Z and Memphis Bleek was one of the top songs from the soundtrack. This jam was also on Jay’s third album Vol2… Hard Knock Life as a bonus track. The track was produced by Damon Dash and Mahogany Music and samples “Once in a lifetime” by the Talking Heads and “Hall of Mirrors” by Kraftwerk. Jay-Z also thrown down on “Love for Free” with Rell, “Only a Customer”, “Murdergram” which also features DMX & Ja Rule, “In My Lifetime (Remix)”, “Your Love” featuring Christion, and “Celebration” with Memphis Bleek, Sauce Money & Wais. Talk about music that was taylor made for a movie. The story jumps in and out as Jay rips his songs with Damon Dash by his side. In most of his songs the lines of his verse are also being said and acted out in the movie and matching it scene for scene. A must see for Jay-Z fans or any 90’s Hip-Hop fan!
