PRhyme (DJ Premier & Royce da 5’9″) Album Review
When I first heard that Royce da 5’9″ and DJ Premier were doing an entire album together I said to myself “that’s going to be dope”! Then the album dropped and I was anxiously waiting to preview it. The results – Banging!
The opening track aptly titled “PRhyme” is the perfect sample of what’s in store. Royce destroys Premier’s samples and drums and reminds us that he’s always been on his lyrical game. The album is only 9 tracks deep and after I listened to the album a few times I was wanting more.
The features on the album I feel are worked in perfectly. Let’s be honest, it’s hard for anyone not to shine over a Premo beat but that doesn’t mean it’s easy either. Ab-Soul, Mac Miller, Common, Dwele, Jay Electronica, Schoolboy Q, Killer Mike and Slaughterhouse all make appearances on Prhyme. My personal favorite is “To Me, To You” featuring Jay Electronica. That track was on replay quite a few times.
“U Looz” is a short track that really sounds like it was recorded years ago. “What you tryin’ to rap now”?? Thanks Preem!
This is what REAL HIP-HOP is! Prhyme is what Hip-Hop used to be. Raw. Real. Classic.
While it’s not a masterpiece of epic proportions it’s a solid 4 of 5 stars.
