Ice Cube “No Vaseline”: O’Shea Jackson aka Ice Cube was born and raised in Los Angeles California, South Central area and went to high school at George Washington Prep in LA. He attended the Phoenix Institute of Technology where he studied architectural drafting but more notably he formed the group C.I.A. with K-Dee and Sir Jinx. He soon linked up with Dr. Dre and released a single called “My Posse”. Cube was 17 at the time and soon after they formed the infamous group N.W.A. along with Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella. Cube was known for writing most of the material for the group but did not benefit financially for a lot of his work. One of the biggest hits he wrote was “Boyz-n-the-Hood” for Eazy-E.
Cube originally wrote the song for H.B.O. a group on Eazy-E’s label Ruthless Records. The group had issues with some of the west coast slang that Cube wrote in the song and walked out on the recording session. Dre and the rest of group convinced Eazy to do the song who at time had zero experience on the mic. The session started off real rough with Eazy struggling until Dre kicked everyone else out and worked exclusively with Eazy for a couple days until it was finished.
The group dropped their debut album “Straight Outta Compton” in 88 in which Cube was credited for writing approximately half of (Cube was also credited for writing half of Eazy E’s debut album “Eazy-Duz-It”). The debut album contained their most notorious song “Fuck Tha Police”. The song was an instant classic in the streets but law enforcement was enraged by the lyrics which even resulted in a letter being sent to them from the FBI. The letter seemed to just publicize the group even more and as they toured and many police and security refused to work their shows.
The album was one of the first albums to feature the Parental Advisory label and still ended up going double platinum. Towards the end of ‘89 Cube struggled with securing a contract with the group’s manager Jerry Heller and Cube ended up leaving the group to start his solo career. In May 1990 Ice Cube dropped his debut solo album “AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted” which went platinum, but he never spoke about his former group. N.W.A. released an EP in 1990 “100 Miles and Runnin” but they didn’t take the same route as Cube and threw some shade his way calling him Benedict Arnold who is one of America’s biggest traitors. When Cube heard the lines he was pissed off and on his second album “Death Certificate” he dropped a bomb on his former group called “No Vaseline” .
The diss was released on October 29th, 1991 under Priority, EMI Records and was written by Cube himself. He also produced the track alongside Sir Jinx. Cube is clearly enraged and this comes thru on his bars. Nothing is off bounds as he throws down on the track and responds to the Benedict Arnold lines saying “ Hey yo Dre , stick to producing, Calling me Arnold, but you been a dick, Eazy-E saw your ass and went in it quick “. Slated as some of the greatest diss lines ever “No Vaseline” appears to be the song that took down N.W.A. as a response was never recorded since the group disbanded soon after with Dr. Dre leaving. But in the end it really was Jerry Heller not “No Vaseline” which led to the dismantle of N.W.A..
