Best Hip Hop Debut Albums – Finals (Bracket Challenge)
Wow. Stunning. Not only did N.W.A “Straight Outta Compton” defeat Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic”, but Wu-Tang Clan’s “Enter The Wu-Tang – 36 Chambers” managed a victory of Nas’ “Illmatic.”
I’m sure there will be plenty of fans upset that Nas not only was defeated but failed to take the challenge. Personally, I had Nas winning it all. Am I upset? No. We are supposed to be real hip hop heads. We all have different opinions on “Best Debut Album,” Top 5 MC’s, etc. I don’t know about you but I was listening to these albums this whole week. I couldn’t get enough.
The arguments about the final four was to be expected. There were those that said “it’s 1 MC (Nas) vs several (Wu-Tang)”. I could argue that Wu-Tang had one producer while nice had several. Would “Illmatic” have been different with a sole producer? No question. Would “Enter 36 Chambers” have the same impact with the same producers Nas had? Who knows.
I’ve listened to “The Chronic” and “Straight Outta Compton” more than any other albums. They were essentially my first cassettes. This matchup was difficult for me. Hard to compare but I went for “The Chronic.” Both had the group album feel, but the laid back joints from Dre on Chronic swayed got my vote. These 2 get regular if not daily plays and who can’t help themselves from saying “Fuck Tha Police” every now and then?
The Finals will be interesting. An “East vs West” of hip hop powerhouse groups, if you will. You can now out of the competition if this is really affecting your life. No trophies will be given!
