ghost-town-djs-my-boo-album-cover-back-in-the-day-buffet Who was listening to “My Boo” before the recent “Running Man Challenge?” I can say yes to this. I was blasting this song all last summer on a mixed cd that I made, swinging my hand out of the sunroof of my car and loving every minute of it. This forgotten gem had been bumping in everyone’s speakers at the nearest cookout in the mid 90’s.

Ghost Town DJ’s is the pure definition of a one hit wonder, but who cares? This song was a big hit in the summer of 96’. Ghost Town DJ’s was a group based in Atlanta, they were signed to Jermaine Dupri‘s “So So Def” label. Their single “My Boo” was the only single released on the “So So Def Bass All-Stars” album. On May 21, 1996 the single was released as a Vinyl 12-inch single. The main vocalist is an R&B artist named Virgo Williams, the rest of the group consisting of Darryl Andrews and Rodney Terry.  Ghost Town DJ’s was short lived, they split suddenly in 1997.

Thanks to two New Jersey teens Kevin Vincent and Jerry Hall, they made this song a hit again 20 years later. Kevin and Vincent were in class one-day goofing around, when they thought it would be funny to record themselves doing their own rendition of “running man” to the song. The teens posted the video online about four months ago, but the dance didn’t gain traction until two college basketball players from Maryland, Jaylen Brantley and Jared Nickens decided to make their own videos.  One of the videos has since received over 32,000 likes. “We dance every day for our teammates in the locker room,” said Brantley. “We’re the goofballs. So we were like hey let’s make a video and make everybody laugh.”

The “Running Man Challenge” instantly became an internet dance craze. The challenge has officially broken the internet with millions of people across the world posting videos online for everyone to see.

The success of this “challenge” across social media has once again brought the one-hit wonder Ghost Town DJ’s in to the public foray 20 years later. “My Boo” is on the hot 100 charts, coming in at #29, beating their previous peak at #31 back in 96’.  The song also topping it’s previous peak on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs of No.18 (Aug 24, 1996) to its current position on the charts at No.14.  According to Nielsen Music the song sold 35,000 units in the U.S. in the week ending May 5, 2016. The hit single “My Boo” has had over 1 million Spotify plays, which contributes toward the charts.  Artists like Ciara, and Pitbull have sampled the song. We may not know much about this group or why they did a disappearing act on us, but we appreciate the fond memories of the family cookouts, house parties, and wild pool parties.

Ghost Town Dj’s if you are out there, we just want to say “Thanks.”

Now let’s enjoy these hilarious videos of people “NOT” doing the real “Running Man” dance.
