2015 Year End Album Review 

In 2015 many Back In The Day Buffet artists dropped new albums. Some we know best from their classic albums dropped up to 20+ years ago. While their new music may not match up to the older bangers that we have grown to love, they still put albums and EP’s together to compete with the new school stars like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. Below is a breakdown of the releases in 2015 that show us that our favorite old school artists can still throw down in this new age of Hip-Hop.

Big Shug “Triple OGzus”

The Boston MA (Mattapan) artist/actor and member of the legendary Gang Starr Foundation dropped his latest album this year. It features production from DJ Premier & Kid Called Quest and features Reks, Termanology, Singapore Kane, Trumayne & M-Dot. Big Shug appeared on the Gang Starr album from 1994 “Hard to Earn “F.A.L.A.”” and the 1998 popular album “Moment of truth” which featured the big hit single “The Militia”. Favorite single “Showtime” featuring M-Dot of EMS.

Raekwon “Fly International Luxurious Art”

Rated a 63/100 on Metacritics and 3.5/5 on All Music. F.I.L.A. was released album under Raekwon’s own label Ice H2O Records. The album features Ghostface Killah, A$AP Rocky, French Montana, Busta Rhymes, 2 Chainz, Snoop Dogg, Melanie Fiona, Assassins, Rick Ross, Liz Rodriguez & Estelle. Rae pushed back this album to make “A Better Tomorrow” which was the last Wu-tang album released to the public. He dropped his classic debut album “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx..” 20 years ago in 1995. Favorite single “Wall To Wall” featuring Busta Rhymes & French Montana.

Tech N9ne “Special Effects”

AllMusic rated the album as 3.5/5. In 2015 Tech N9ne dropped his 15th and 16th studio album under his own label Strange Music. ”Special Effects” came first in May and in November he released “Strangeulation Vol. II” which features the entire Strange music roster. Favorite single “Hood Go Crazy” featuring B.o.B. & 2 Chainz.

Onyx “Against All Authorities”

The entire EP is 6 songs and was produced by Scopic. It features SickFlo, Merkules, Jasia’n & Ras Kass. Over 20 years ago they dropped “Bacdafucup” which featured the hit single “Slam” & “All We Got Iz Us” with their hit single “Last Dayz”.


Snoop Dogg “Bush”

Snoops newest album was released under Doggystyle, I Am Other, and Columbia Records. It was produced by Pharrell Williams & Chad Hugo & features guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Wilson, Gwen Stefani, T.I. and Rick Ross. “Bush” was the first album by Snoop after his return to the hip hop moniker Snoop Dogg. Metacritics rated the album 69/100 & All Music gave it a 4/5: Favorite song “Peaches N Cream” Charlie Wilson.

Camp Lo “Ragtime Hightimes”

their 5th studio album which dropped on 5/18:

18 years ago Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede dropped “Uptown Saturday Night” on us and gained a ton of fans. “Ragtime Hightimes” brings that vibe back with a few songs from their new album the released this year. Favorite song “Sunglasses”.

Large Professor “Re: Living”

his 5th album released on 6/9:

LARGE-PRO-RELIVING

The former Main Source group member from Toronto dropped an album this year and went back to his roots to use his Main Source style. The album features Cormega, Roc Marciano, Fortune, G-Wiz, Inspectah Deck & Lord Jamar. Favorite song “In the Scrolls”

 

 

Ghostface Killah “Twelve Reasons to Die II”

his 12th studio released on 7/10:

Rated a 72/100 by Metacritics with guest appearances from Raekwon, RZA, Scarub, Vince Staples, Lyrics Born, Chino XL and Bilal. Ghostface also dropped Sour Soul in 2015 which is a collab with the Canadian jazz band BADBADNOTGOOD. Favorite song “Blackout” f Raekwon

 

 

Public Enemy “Man Plans God Laughs”

Metacritic rated the album 70/100 & Allmusic gave it 4/5. It was released on Spotify under Spitdigital and was produced by Gary G-Wiz & Carl Ryder. It has been 25 years since their classic jam “Fight the Power” dropped.

 

 

Warren G “Regulate… G Funk Era, pt II”

is his 1st EP released on 8/6:

Warren’s newest album under G-Funk Entertainment is his first album since 2009 when he released “The G Files”. It features vocals from the late Nate Dogg along with E-40, Too Short, Jeezy & Bun B. Favorite song “Keep on Hustlin” Nate Dogg.

 

Dr. Dre “Compton”

his 3rd studio album released on 8/7:

Metacritic rated it 82/100 and AllMusic gave it 4/5. It was recorded at several recording studios and was handled by Focus…, Dem Jointz, DJ Dahi, Cardiak, DJ Premier and Dr. Dre himself among others. It features guest appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Cold 187um, The Game, Ice Cube, Xzibit, & Anderson Paak . Dre’s last album was “2001” and dropped in 1999. Favorite song “Deep Water” featuring Kendrick Lamar & Justus.

 

Method Man “The Meth Lab”

Metacritic rated it 59/100 and Allmusic gave it 3.5/5. The album was released under Hanz On Music and Tommy Boy Entertainment. Meth’s last album was in 2006 with “4:21.. the Day After”. It features guest appearances from Redman, Hanz On, Streetlife, and Wu-Tang Clan members Raekwon, Inspectah Deck and Masta Killa. 2016 is already looking promising for Meth who has 2 scheduled drops with his newest album “Crystal Meth” and “Blackout! 3” w/ Redman. Favorite song “The Purple Tape”.

 

 

Sean Price “Songs in the Key of Price”

Sean P’s 5th album dropped on 8/21 by Sean Price:

We tragically lost Sean P aka Ruck on August 8th at the age of 43. He had his newest album in the works and it was released soon after he left us. The Boot Camp Click member first appeared on Smif-N-Wessun’s 1995 album “Dah Shinin”. In 1996 he was also known as one half of the critically acclaimed Brooklyn duo Heltah Skeltah. They released their debut album “Nocturnal” on Duck Down Records and would go on to release “Magnum Force” in 1998 and “D.I.R.T.” in 2008. The new album features Illa Ghee, Foul Monday, Rim, Royal Flush, Ike Eyes, & Head I.C.E.. Favorite jam “Figure More” ft Illa Ghee.

 

Scarface “Deeply Rooted”

released his 12th studio album on 9/4:

The Gheto Boys member dropped his newest edition this year which features guest appearances from Papa Reu, Z-Ro, Rush Davis, Nas, Rick Ross, John Legend, Avant and CeeLo Green. It has been 21 years since Scarface dropped the classic “I Seen a Man Die” Allmusic rated it 3.5/5. Favorite song “Steer”.

 

 

Erick Sermon “E.S.P. (Erick Sermon’s Perception)”

The former EPMD & Def Squad member released his newest album this year “E.S.P.”. It features Faith Evans, Fish Grease, Fred Da Godson, Jarren Benton, Joell Ortiz, Keith Murray, Krayzie Bone, Masspike Miles, Method Man, Redman, Ryize, Sheek Louch, Syleena Johnson, Too $hort, & Voice. This is his 7th album under Def Squad Records and was entirely produced by E himself. Favorite song “Clutch” w Method Man & Redman.

 

Redman “Mudface”

his 8th studio album dropped on 11/13:

Reggie dropped his newest album under Gilla House Records late in 2015. The album is rumored to be a hold over til “Muddy Waters 2” & “Blackout!3” w/ Method Man which are both set to drop in 2016. Hard to think that his debut album “Whut? Thee Album” dropped 23 years ago. Favorite jam “N*gga Like Me”.
